Silikamva High School has rewritten its own story. Once struggling with a matric pass rate of just over 40%,
the school has now reached a powerful milestone a 100% matric pass rate.
Located in Imizamo Yethu, a community facing deep socio-economic challenges, Silikamva’s learners often study in overcrowded homes, many without desks, quiet spaces or basic learning resources. Yet, against these odds, the class of 2025 showed that determination can outweigh circumstance.
The turnaround did not happen overnight. It was the result of years of deliberate effort stricter academic discipline, extra lessons after school and on weekends, and teachers who stayed long after the final bell rang. Educators closely tracked learner progress, stepping in early when students struggled, and refusing to let anyone fall through the cracks.
What makes the achievement even more impressive is the quality of the results. A large number of learners obtained bachelor’s passes, several subjects recorded a 100% pass rate, and dozens of distinctions were earned. These results opened doors to universities and opportunities that once felt out of reach for many learners.
Community support also played a key role. Parents, caregivers, and education partners worked alongside the school, creating a culture where education mattered and effort was celebrated. Learners were reminded daily that their background did not define their future.
Silikamva High School’s journey from 40% to 100% stands as proof that excellence is possible anywhere. With committed leadership, dedicated teachers, and learners who believe in themselves, even the most under-resourced schools can rise and shine.
